Bulldogs make good pets for a number of reasons: they are relatively low energy and don’t require a great deal of exercise. They are calm, short haired and of course, they have unique faces that just make you want to smile. Generally, they are good with children, although as with any breed, each dog is an individual.

Unfortunately, bulldogs are very high maintenance animals. Starting at birth – they must be delivered via cesarean section due to the shape of their faces. If a bully were to delivery naturally, there is a chance the pups eyes would literally pop out of there heads due to the pressure in the birth canal. Not exactly a great beginning! Once they have successfully entered the big wide world, care must be taken not to overexert the dog, especially in the hot summer months. Bulldogs have been known to die while walking with their owners – heart attacks and difficulty breathing in the heat can cause sudden death.

And, while their faces are exceptionally cute (well, at least to those of us who love them!) the wrinkles can cause a problem called entropia, were the eyelashes of dog actually roll in on the eyeball, causing sores on the cornea. When a dog has had several cornea abrasions, it may require that the animal undergo a little plastic surgery – an eye tuck – to correct the problem. That procedure can run about $1,000 per eye.

Then there are the skin issues. Bulldogs, particularly lighter skinned bullies, tend to have very sensitive skin. Allergies to common place and essentially unavoidable things like grass, can cause the dog to break-out in boils on his belly which require treatment with an antihistamine, prednisone and antibiotics. Another skin related ailment the lighter bulldogs are susceptible to is seasonal alopecia. This is a disorder that causes the dog to loose most or all of his coat, generally on sides of the dog’s torso. This condition is not a health hazard to the dog, (except for increased risk of sunburn), but it can make your vacuum work overtime during the periods when the dog is loosing his hair.

Bulldogs are generally good, lovable, if stubborn pets. However, before you are drawn in by that irresistible little face, do your homework and start a savings account in the dog’s name!

English Bulldog Puppy for Sale Nightingale Bullies

We reccomend you find a English Bulldog Specialist ( a vet who commonly sees bulldogs daily and knows the health risk and concerns about the bulldog breed).

One of the main things we have seen in the past with your normal vet is not treating respiratory infections correctly.

Bulldogs are very succeptable to catching a cold or getting an upper respiratory infection and it is a serious matter not to be taken lightly. Most vets will send the bulldog puppy home with general clavamox and the puppy never gets well.

The puppy will appear to be getter better for a few days then it goes down hill again and actually begins to worsen.

We recommend that your vet put your puppy on Azithromycin Liquid Suspension as it is a fluid that will actually help stop drainage into the lungs and also dry up any mucous already in the lungs. It has saved many bulldog lives in the past and continues to work today.

It is the same treatment that we give to infants with respiratory infections and pneumonia.

Also, another great tool to have is a nebulizer. You can buy any of these online or usually your vet can tell you where to purchase one. I have used Gentimycin and Salene Solution in the medicine cup of the nebulizer to help treat pneumonia.

You can place the puppy in a crate and run the nebulizer mouth piece in the crate. Make sure to cover all sides of the crate with a towel including front and let the puppy inhale the medicine. We do this about 3 times a day until all medicine have been inhaled in medicine cup.

This will help keep lungs secreted and also helps open the lungs for the puppy to breathe. It is a life saver to have with a bulldog.

Also, a great method of help breaking up the mucous is dropping a few drops lemon juice into the back of the bulldogs throat as it also helps open up their airways.

Rubbing and massaging the chest is another great way to help break away the mucous in the chest cavity as well.

Mucinex cough for children is something else that works well with liquifying the mucous so they can easily extract it. Make sure to use childrens and not adult.

I give a teaspoon morning and night before bedtime.

During this time the bulldogs diet should be soft and I would recommend putting him on boiled chicken and brown rice as it is easily to digest and is soft and want irritate their trachea or esophagus.

These are tricks of the trade that I have learned through the years and hopefully it will help you and your bulldog. I am not a vet…just an experienced breeder who loves her bullies!

1. Choose a puppy instead of a full-grown dog.

Puppies are clean slates; they haven’t had any training yet. An improperly-trained adult dog can be taught to behave, but it will be a more difficult task for the inexperienced owner.

2. Teach your puppy good manners right from the beginning.

Puppies only know how to act like puppies, and they’re awfully cute doing so! But if you allow him to misbehave, or nip and bite people, you’ll reinforce his misbehavior and may end up with a dog who is not a good companion and may even be a threat. Even very young puppies can be taught the sit/stay, down, and come commands. Get a good book on dog training or enroll yourself and your puppy in a dog obedience course.

3. Choose a dog breed with a reputation for being submissive.

Research the various dog breeds before choosing your puppy. Most breeds will generally have either dominant or submissive personalities, although there are variations within a breed. The guard and sporting breeds generally have more dominant personalities, and an inexperienced dog owner may have difficulty keeping them under control. A dominant dog will run the household if you let him! Submissive breeds are more eager to please you and tend to be easier to train and control. When choosing a puppy from a litter, roll the puppy onto his back and rub his tummy. Usually, a more submissive puppy will allow you to do so; a more dominant puppy will resist.

4. Use voice commands to correct; never hit your dog.

Striking a dog only makes him fearful and distrustful of humans. Use a high-pitched voice to praise him when he’s being good, and a low, gruff voice to gently scold (never yell) when he’s misbehaving.

5. Learn about dog nutrition and health.

Feed your dog a high-quality dog food for his optimum growth and a healthy immune system. Have him checked out by your vet, and regularly as your vet recommends, to catch any potential health problems early.

6. Socialize your puppy.

Dogs who are exposed to a variety of people, other animals, sights, and sounds while they’re young will be less fearful of new experiences as they grow older. Take your dog on car rides to fun places at an early age, so he doesn’t learn to associate a car ride with a trip to the vet!

7. Have patience when potty-training.

Puppies are like children; some take right to potty-training, and sometimes it seems like it’s never going to happen! You can help your puppy become trained more quickly by confining him to a small space, or a crate, when you are not able to supervise him. Clean up all accidents immediately with a urine removal product. It’s a dog’s nature to go in a spot that has been previously soiled with urine or feces, and stained carpeting can greatly hinder your efforts to house break your dog.

8. Give your puppy his own toys.

If you don’t care to have your new shoes chewed up, don’t give him your old ones to play with! Puppies should have their own dog-safe toys to play with, and may have a preference for either soft or hard toys. You may have to experiment to find out which your dog prefers. When you catch him chewing on something that is not his, simply replace the object with one of his own toys until he learns the difference. Praise him when you see him playing with his own toys instead of your belongings.

9. Handle your puppy gently.

Don’t allow anyone to play roughly with your puppy. Your dog needs to understand that all touch is good. A dog who is shy of being touched will be difficult to handle if he requires grooming or must be given first aid treatment. Get him used to having his mouth, feet and legs, ears, and other body parts handled.

10. Protect your dog from household hazards.

Just as you would with small children in the house, look around your home and yard for potential hazards. Keep electrical cords tucked away where they can’t be reached. Place household cleaners and chemicals on a high shelf or in a locked cabinet. Avoid houseplants and landscape plants that may be toxic to your dog. Pick up small toys or other small objects that may be a choking hazard. Your dog’s safety is your responsibility!
